Engagement Rings - Symbols of a Lifetime of Love

Popping the “big question” is exciting and nerve-wracking. You want everything to be perfect: the setting, the mood…the ring. Selecting a romantic spot seems easy compared to finding the perfect ring. Don’t worry; I’ll let you in on some pointers to find the right ring for your special lady. First of all, you have to realize what the wedding ring symbolizes to a woman. It’s not only a nice new piece of jewelry or something to be shown off to friends and family, although it serves these functions too. Engagement rings are a symbol of your love, sharing a life together, commitment. It does not have to be the most expensive or flashy ring in the world, but it does have to come from the heart with thought and feeling. Make sure to consider your future fiancées tastes and personal style. Is she more likely to prefer a classic ring, such as a traditional solitaire (with a single stone, usually a diamond, in the center) or a three stone ring (usually with a larger stone set in the center and two smaller ones on the sides)? Perhaps she has a unique style and would prefer an antique or vintage ring. There are also many designers of custom engagement rings which allow you options in the design and/or stone selection for the ring. Many retailers also sell sets which include the wedding band as well, often fitting together in a sleek and attractive design.

Consider whether she would prefer flowing lines or sleek geometric lines. Does she have delicate hands which require a petite ring or does she need something more substantial to look balanced on her finger? Make sure to find out if there is any heirloom jewelry or stones in the family which are waiting to be passed down to her or that have sentimental value. There are many factors which affect the price including: the metal used, the type of stone and its quality and the design and size. Don’t worry there are lovely engagement rings to fit every budget. Platinum being the most durable and the rarest jewelry metal is the most expensive, however it will stand the test of time maintaining prong strength and resisting scratches for generations. Gold and white gold are popular and durable choices. Although not quite as strong as platinum it’s an excellent choice, and if cared for properly can hold up for many generations. Silver is not often chosen because it tarnishes easily and is not as durable. There are also many other stone options other than diamonds if you’re looking for something a bit different or cheaper. Ruby, sapphire and emerald are the three main stones chosen most often other than diamond. There are also stones which look very similar to diamonds but cost a fraction of the price such as moissanite and cubic zirconia. No matter what you choose, just make sure the ring and the proposal come from your heart and she will most likely be overjoyed.
